Whether you’re a backpacking college student or an empty nester out to explore the world, solo travel is on the rise and, according to Lonely Planet, only getting more popular. Now the travel media company has pooled its best expert travel tips for globetrotters going it alone. The new “Solo Travel Handbook” (Lonely Planet, 168 pages, $18) lands on bookstore shelves tomorrow, with tips on everything from vaccinations, luggage and flight-booking hacks to “non-awkward ways to meet people on the road.” There are smart and clever ways to finesse your arrival in a strange city, and 20 ways to stay safe on the road.

Lonely Planet’s new “Solo Travel Handbook”
Overall, it’s an incredibly helpful book, but our favorite parts are the itinerary-inspiration sections, which include a solo travel quiz to help you determine your vacation style. We feel confident in saying that if your answer to “What’s your favorite street food?” is “deep-fried scorpions,” you shouldn’t be traveling with anyone who answered “hot dogs.” (Good thing you’re traveling solo, eh?)

No matter what your quiz results, chances are high you’ll find the perfect travel inspiration in the chapter on 10 great trips for solo travelers, which include practicalities, “sweet stays,” “epic solo travel experiences” and “books for your backpack” for each adventure, whether it’s a foodie jaunt to Vietnam or a tropical escape to Belize. Here’s just a taste. Find the book at shop.lonelyplanet.com and other booksellers.
